The smell of justice festivals and GIRAFs

September means back to business. The Calgary International Film Festival has announced its lineup and you can check it out online at www.calgaryfilm.com . Favourite series like Music on Film Late Shows and Contemporary World Cinema return alongside fresh features glamorous galas and a Spotlight on Australia. The film fest runs September 21 to 30 at a variety of venues.

The Marda Loop Justice Film Festival will present its quarterly screening on Tuesday September 11. Peace One Day directed by Jeremy Gilley charts Gilley’s five-year attempt to bring about a worldwide ceasefire. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church Auditorium 3818 14 A St. S.W. Admission is free and the screening will be followed by a discussion with Michael Gretton of the Southern Alberta Heritage Language Association.

Keeping with the progressive theme the Arusha Centre resumes its Action Film Series with a screening of Super Amigos a feature-length documentary that follows a group of luchadors — five modern-day super heroes fighting for social justice and human and animal rights in Mexico City. The event takes place on Wednesday September 19 at 7 p.m. at the Plaza Theatre. The event will feature an opportunity to present your own super hero in a fashion show and contest with prizes. Meanwhile still at the Plaza the 2007 Japan Film Festival runs from September 18 to 20. Presented by The Japan Foundation and the Consulate General of Japan in Calgary the fest will show Kamikaze Girls the animated feature The Glass Rabbit Hotel Hibiscus and the drama Twilight Samurai . The Quickdraw Animation Society (QAS) is accepting submissions for its Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (GIRAF) until October 6 2007. The screenings aren’t until November but if you are interested in entering this super cool festival now in its third year pop by the QAS online www.qas.awn.com .
