The best free downloads money can buy

It’s with mixed feelings that Radio Silence reports that music still costs money at least if you choose to acquire it legally. The website www.qtrax.com made a huge splash awhile back by claiming to have signed distribution deals with every major label that would allow people to download unlimited songs for free. All it was supposed to cost was the time needed to download the software and patience to put up with advertisements which was how the site believed it would make money. Of course it all turned out to be a bunch of crap so everything’s back to the old status quo which at the very least means there’s still a reason to continue searching for the best in free legal MP3s online.

• The Re-Up Gang — We Got it For Cheap Vol. 3 (www.megaupload.com/?d=MZ4JZD4L)

After releasing one of the best hip hop albums in recent memory — 2006’s Hell Hath No Fury — The Clipse have returned with the third volume in their consistently excellent mixtape series. Clipse members Pusha T and Malice are joined by Ab-Liva and Sandman to form The Re-Up Gang and though the subject matter doesn’t stray from drug-slinging tales typical to the genre the four MCs demonstrate an undeniable vitality and charisma that makes this freebie mixtape a lot more engaging than a good deal of hip hop being released today. Knowledgeable listeners will recognize a few recycled beats but after The Neptunes’ incredibly spartan production on Hell Hath No Fury it’s refreshing to hear Clipse rhyme over something fully formed for a change.

• Justice — Rejected Fabric Mix (www.dailybeats.de/file-vault/audio/misc/justice-fabric-rejected-mix.mp3)

French dance duo Justice were one of the big success stories of 2007. On the strength of their incredibly infectious single “D.A.N.C.E.” the duo became a crossover hit corralled that success into … one of the most critically gushed-over albums of the year and were referred to in some circles as the new Daft Punk. They were also tapped to create an instalment in the popular FabricLive DJ series for London label Fabric. For whatever reason Fabric looked a sure thing in the face and shot it down. Fabric’s loss is the rest of the world’s gain though. Now instead of hunting down a limited edition import-only copy all anyone has to do to hear what a mix by one of the hottest electronic acts in the world featuring the likes of Goblin Fancy Midnight Juggernauts The Fucking Champs Daft Punk and Todd Rundgren sounds like is hop onto the ol’ Internet and download it for free.

• Cut Copy – So Cosmic (www.zshare.net/audio/6323046640ca06/)

Keeping things on the DJ mixes-Daft Punk-Fabric end of the spectrum Australian electronic trio Cut Copy — who were responsible for FabricLive.29 in 2006 — recently put together an hour-long mix and threw it online in honour of ubiquitous dance robots Daft Punk’s recent trek Down Under. The mix is an eclectic disco-tinged affair that features several preview tracks from Cut Copy’s forthcoming album In Ghost Colours alongside Aphex Twin Panda Bear Panthers Bell X1 and Fleetwood Mac among others. Though the above list might not necessarily suggest cohesion So Cosmic flows together remarkably well and shouldn’t have any trouble making backsides shake with reckless abandon.
