With a title like Molotov Rocktail it’s no surprise that the latest album by Calgary’s The Martyr Index is a bit cheesy. Using slicked-down riffs and pitchy vocals the band spends most of its time delivering overwrought political messages with scud-missile subtlety. Ironically when the band backseats the rock ’n’ roll theatrics in favour of low-key bang-and-twang as on “Security” the restraint works. The rest of the time it’s all in-your-face message rock and while the politics are admirable they just get in the way of the music.
