LGBT centre needed: report

Researchers identify gaps in local services

Calgary needs a new community centre specifically for lesbian gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people according to a new study from Calgary OutLink.

The report written by a social work professor at the University of Calgary says there’s a gap in local services available to LGBT people. Researchers surveyed 230 local LGBT people online as part of the study and nine of 10 respondents agreed that a community hub is needed.

“Calgary doesn’t have an area per se for the LGBT communities to feel a certain amount of safety and also just a freedom to be them in their relationships” says Melissa Luhtanen president of Calgary OutLink. “A community centre is one solution.”
