Film fund surplus allocated to future projects

‘News encouraging but funding model still needs revamping — union chair’

Alberta’s film and television industry which took a $3-million hit in the recent budget will see some relief this year. The province plans to use money left over from last year’s film fund to cover contractual obligations thus freeing funds for projects that come forward this year says a government spokesperson.

“There is money left over in the fund this budget year because activity has not been high enough to take up the full $20 million” says Parker Hogan with the department of Culture and Community Spirit.

While the money is welcome the province still needs to re-examine how it funds productions says Damian Petti chair of the Alberta Association of Motion Picture and Television Unions. “It sounds encouraging” he says. “But we’re still looking for changes to the funding model.”
