Notes for the weekend: Buzzcocks Broken Social Scene The Room and more

A few things that’ve come up since the paper came out:

• The Buzzcocks are going to be at The Republik on Saturday May 29 playing the entirety of their first two albums plus a handful of other tunes. I got to see them a couple of years ago at a summer festival in England and I’ve gotta say it was awesome and not just because I was the youngest person in the mosh pit by a solid 20 years. Anyone who’s cared about pop-punk in the last 30 years owes it to themselves to check this out. (Plus it’s an early show so no excuses for old-timers).

Next up Arts & Crafts is offering a stream of a few tracks off the new Broken Social Scene album so if you’re curious what that’s all about… um… just listen to it I guess.

And in a nod to our sister paper in Edmonton See Magazine they’ve run a pair of interesting interviews with some acts that are coming to Calgary this weekend. There’s a chat with The Pointed Sticks (who’ve been doing Buzzcocks-esque pop and punk since the late ’70s and will be at The Marquee Room this Saturday) and one with Goodbye Beatdown a band that features Roberto Luongo’s cousin and’ll be at the Rusty Cage tonight.

Lastly if you have any interest whatsoever in hypnotically awful cinema you must must must go see The Room at the Plaza on Thursday April 1 or Sunday April 4. This article from the AV Club explains the appeal better than I ever could but you can also just watch the clips below for the staggering awfulness The Room promises:
