No More Shapes – Creesus Crisis

Drip Audio

Whether drumming for Chad VanGaalen organ-driven dream-pop duo Lovesinger or his own outré-jazz project No More Shapes Eric Hamelin has proven himself as one of the most wildly talented imaginative percussionists Calgary has ever spawned. On Creesus Crisis he’s joined by fellow renaissance weirdos Jay Crocker and J.C. Jones for a bitchin’ brew of trombone guitar bass electronics and other goodies.

Whether playing it (relatively) straight-faced on smoky lounge numbers like “Invisible Glasses” and “Twice Bitten” or busting out a more breathless pace on songs like “Fat Kid” and “Snake Legs” this 36-minute trip is imbued with enough unpredictable twists and turns to keep any beatnik or bopper on their toes. The real winner is contemplative closer “New Years (Yves’)” a staple of the group’s live show for several years now and now laid to tape in shimmering fashion. Praise Creesus.
