Anyone who rides their bike along Calgary’s roadways knows that things can be a little hairy. A lack of cycling infrastructure and a lack of familiarity on the part of most Calgary drivers mean a commute to work can be dangerous or exhilirating depending on your outlook.
So what would it be like to have the road to yourself? Well without any cars anyway.
That’s the point of the second annual Calgary Bike Festival’s Ride the Road. Participants will get the rare opportunity to ride from north Calgary through downtown and into Stanley Park on the banks for the Elbow River in the south. From there another ride will set out to loop through downtown. Police escorts with rolling blockades will ensure cyclists and car free ride.
The ride from north Calgary is a more brisk affair while the loop through dowtown is perfect for families and participants of all speeds and skills.
Once the rides are over the festival in Stanley Park will feautre local cycling groups and businesses information booths and even a tractor pull with bikes.
The event is organized by the Calgary tour de nuit Society an organization committed to improving the city’s cycling infrastructure and promoting cycling as a viable means of transportation.
