Pizza Pursuit – Hanni’s Restaurant

Order: Hanni’s Special ($21.25). A 12-inch pizza topped with roasted garlic chicken red onions banana peppers basil and feta.

Crust: A basic dough with large end pieces most of which were coated with shreds of wonderfully crisped cheese. It was fairly doughy but not undercooked — and was lightly browned on the underside.

Sauce: A thick overly spiced sauce. The spices worked well but the sauce would have been just as good without them. Although the sauce was decent it was overshadowed by the rest of the ingredients.

Toppings: There was a good amount of chicken which was moist and flavourful. It wasn’t overtly garlicky. I was pleasantly surprised with the banana peppers which had a nice textural crunch (as did the red onions). Far too often these peppers are just a soggy mess and I’m glad that this was not the case here. The basil was finely chopped but didn’t add much beyond a visual presence. Lastly the feta was used moderately bringing a salty tang to the party without trying to take over the whole show.

Dining options: Eat in takeout or delivery.

Decision: Overall I liked this pizza. It wasn’t mind-blowingly good but there wasn’t much wrong with it either. The quality of the ingredients was great and everything worked well together. I wouldn’t go out of my way for Hanni’s pizzas but if I was nearby or lived in that area I would visit them again without question. The Hanni’s Special gets four out of six slices.

Next up: Michael’s (139 10 Ave. S.W.)
