New Joni Mitchell ballet postponed

A new Joni Mitchell ballet scheduled to debut in May 2014 at Alberta Ballet has been postponed.

The company issued a news release stating that the beloved Canadian folk singer was not able to produce a final song list for the ballet which had planned to focus on the theme of love.

"Joni and I believe we have a superb production in the making but that we will need more collaboration for our ballet on love to be properly produced. We will honor this decision as we believe that all artists should be given the freedom to make such decisions especially artists of the caliber of Joni Mitchell" stated artistic director Jean Grand-Maître.

Grand-Maître and Mitchell previously collaborated on another ballet The Fiddle and the Drum in 2007.

To fill the hole in its season Alberta Ballet will première a new creation CLASS ACTS – A Tribute to Hollywood Musicals choreographed by Grand-Maître. The ballet will pay tribute to the magical era of Hollywood musicals from the 1930s and 1940s featuring the legendary recordings of artists including Frank Sinatra Billie Holiday Ella Fitzgerald Lena Horne Nat "King" Cole and Chet Baker.
