Theatre Calgary searching for new leader

Theatre Calgary will start the 2014-15 season without its longtime president at the helm. Tom McCabe has been involved with the theatre company since the early 1990s serving as the chair of the board of directors from 1992 to 1995 and becoming its president in 1997. He has announced his intention to step down in September.

"Theatre Calgary is the most rewarding job I have ever had" says McCabe in a media release. "To play a role in making sure the company not only survived but grew and flourished is so fulfilling. The staff of the theatre on all levels have given everything into making Theatre Calgary one of the most successful theatres in the country. I am so proud of where we are and what we have achieved. I will miss Theatre Calgary very much."

When McCabe a former vice-president of the Bank of Montreal in Calgary took over in 1997 Theatre Calgary was in financial crisis facing bankruptcy and closure. One year later the company was debt-free.

"Theatre Calgary would not be the company it is today without Tom McCabe. He has worked tirelessly since the day he took on the role 17 years ago" said board chair Mark Thompson in a media release. "…Our loyal patrons artists and cultural community in Calgary have so much to be thankful to Tom for. He truly is a Canadian arts leader."

Theatre Calgary will be searching for a successor in the coming months.
