Top picks for getting out June 15 – 21

We run down your best entertainment bets in Calgary for the upcoming week including The JazzYYC Summer Festival, The Darcys, album release by Allison Lynch, the CPO’s Sci-Fi Spectacular and more.

This week was great for concert announcements: The Cave Singers, Austra, Tegan and Sara, Skillet… Tickets for most shows go on sale Friday, June 16. Check links for details!

Coming up this week — you thought you would take it easy before Sled Island? Not a chance.

• Thursday: The JazzYYC Summer Festival begins, with performances taking place throughout Inglewood, workshops at NMC and a mainstage show taking place at MRU. The festival runs June 15 to 18, with the free closing Sunday Jazz Walk something you’re going to want to take in. Also Thursday in Inglewood, the talented Allison Lynch will hold her Album Release for Skin & Flame at Festival Hall at 8 p.m. If the rock is more your style, Hollerado will be at Marquee.

• Friday: Head to the Glenbow for their Summer Exhibitions launch party, or maybe to the Jack Singer for the Calgary Phil’s presentation of Sci-Fi Spectacular: Star Wars to Star Trek. If something more *ahem* contemporary is your thing, I would highly suggest catching The Darcys at Hifi Friday night. See you there?

• Saturday: Tiny Bear Jaws’ Everyone We Know Will BeThere: A House Party in One Act presented by Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre takes place at 7 or 9 p.m., check the link for details. For music, you can head to the Palomino for Ten Minute Detour with CHANS and Scotch Whiskey Limousine. There. Settled.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week — and your Sledding — ahead.
