Top picks for getting out June 29 – July 5

We run down your best entertainment bets in Calgary for the upcoming week, including Nobody Say Anything, Otafest, Canada 150 celebrations and more.

Summer is in full swing but that doesn’t mean that your options for entertainment let up any. You just have to fit it all in amidst the bbqs, bike rides and what some of you like to call “camping.” Some thoughts on what to take in this week, as well as a gratuitous plug for the Tour de France… read on!

Just announced this week: Questlove will be at Commonwealth July 15; Northland and Intervals perform at Marquee Beer Market & Stage July 29; and Tei Shi at Commonwealth Oct. 7. Check links for details, when tickets are on sale.

• Thursday: Depending on your style and musical preference, you could either head to the Jack Singer for the Glenn Miller Orchestra at 7 p.m., or over to Festival Hall for Nobody Say Anything featuring Chris Dadge, Mark Limacher, Nathaniel Schmidt and Nate Waters at 7 p.m.

• Friday: Make your way up to South Calgary to the new King Edward School where the I Am Western group art exhibition opens at cSPACE’s new digs. Artists will be in attendance, including the lovely Billie Rae Busby — I am not biased. Otafest 2017 also begins this Friday and runs until July 2 at the Telus  Convention Centre. Get your … anime on? Does that even make sense? Doesn’t matter — go check it out!

• Saturday: Canada Day 150 celebrations are taking place all over the city! If you find yourself downtown, there is a lot to see along Stephen Avenue, including activities at Glenbow, the King Eddy, Studio Bell, The Palace, BassBus will be at Eau Claire Market … so much going on!

• Sunday: It’s the long weekend, so why not head out to Banff for the afternoon and then catch Brent Lee perform at the Rose & Crown?

• Wednesday: I Am the Mountain with Tavis E Triance & the Natural Way with guests perform at the Palomino.

And, if you’re a cycling nerd like myself, you will need to get out after spending three hours every morning for the next three weeks glued to your TV/computer screens watching the Tour de France. It’s a good thing that none of these events take place between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. when I’m yelling “Allez, allez!” at my TV.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
