Top picks for getting out Oct. 19 – 25 including Fluid Fest, Fred Penner, YYComedy Fest, Evan Freeman and more

Remember the days when I used to be able to give you a rough Top 5 picks for the weekend? Clearly limiting it to 5 is impossible with so many interesting and varied things to do in Calgary, maybe I should start aiming for a Top 13…

Thursday: Get your dance fix with Springboard Dance’s Fluid Fest 2017, running until Oct. 28 at various venues in town. Take in some local musical talent at Nite Owl featuring Evan Freeman with Lyra Brown, Hello Moth & Doug Hoyer, or if you’re more of a rock music lover – and I mean RAWK – head to the Palomino for Nik Turner’s Hawkwind with Hedersleben & Tiny Shrine. That’s 3.

Friday: This weekend is your last chance to catch inVISIBLE by Handsome Alice Theatre at the Matthews Theatre, U of C. And did you know that The YYComedy Festival wraps up this weekend as well? Head to the Plaza Theatre tonight to catch DeAnne Smith. I’m ready for laffs! That’s 2.

Saturday: Family fun down at Glenbow with their Slumber Party from 5 – 11:30 p.m. Who hasn’t wanted to sleep in a public museum? Wait, that sends the wrong message… For those of you sans children you should really get to The Gateway to check out Trench Finger & The Path Less Traveled Dual CD Release show. That’s 2.

Sunday: The Calgary Music Collector’s Show takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Acadia Rec Centre, and if you get there early enough, you can be done your vinyl shopping in time to hit the Jack Singer Concert Hall to take in Fred Penner with Orchestra, presented by Calgary Phil. That’s another 2.

Monday: Lunchbox Theatre opens Flight Risk, their latest production, which will run until Nov. 11. The Deep Dark Woods with Oxlip perform that evening at Festival Hall. 2 more.

Wrapping up the week, Shane Koyczan brings the comedy to MacEwan Hall on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday Alberta Ballet’s Dangerous Liasons opens and runs until Oct. 28 at the Jubilee Auditorium. And this, my friends, brings my Top Picks total this week to 13. Yay, me! *personal note: must work on time management and getting Top Picks under 10.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
