Fashion retailers Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom Rack set to open shop in Calgary

Spring is looking good for shopping enthusiasts as two big-name stores from south of the border are set to open next year.

While Nordstrom has found strong footing here since opening a few years ago, bargain hunters will rejoice as it’s off-price division, Nordstrom Rack, comes to Calgary. The Deerfoot Meadows location will be 30,500-square-feet of deeply discounted fashions, shoes and accessories.

The Seattle-based retailer, which chose Calgary as its first Canadian location, plans to open some 15 to 20 Nordstrom Racks eventually, including two in Toronto. They are promising shoppers will find savings between 30 and 70 per cent on merchandise coming from Nordstrom stores.

Meanwhile, the former Target location in Chinook Centre will be home to the new Saks Fifth Avenue, filling the two floors and 115,000-square-foot space with shoes, cosmetics, handbags and ready-to-wear clothes for men and women.

(It’s own discount-focused store, Saks OFF Fifth Avenue, opened last year at CrossIron Mills, north of the city.)

Known as one of the world’s top specialty retailers, Saks has 41 stores in the U.S. and Canada, along with five international locations and are online at saks.com. (It is also part of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s portfolio.)

The store is currently hiring for all positions, including managers, sales and support staff, merchandising and alterations. Saks has set up a recruitment centre in the Chinook Centre professional tower and is encouraging people to apply for the 120 full- and part-time positions by walking in or applying online.

Market Mall also has a new store to boast of. Hillberg & Berk, the jewellers known for their uber sparkly stud earrings, statement necklaces and bracelets, have opened their first store in Calgary. The Market Mall location is the seventh standalone store in Canada for the Regina-based jewellery company. It opened earlier this month.

Their pieces are crafted using Swarovski crystals for maximum sparkle, along with semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls. Even Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has been known to sport Hillberg & Berk pieces — so you’re in very good company when you wear them.

The nearly 1,000-square-foot store has a lounge and even fitting rooms so clients can try on jewellery with different outfits they brought in.
