Force will be strong at three Calgary Public Library locations Saturday as they celebrate Star Wars Day

If you’re heading to one of three area libraries this Saturday, the sound of “Shushes” will be replaced by a much more welcoming one.

“Pew, pew, pew.”

The Calgary Public Library will be celebrating Star Wars Day: The Library Strikes Back from noon to 4 p.m. at a trio of locations: Central Library (616 Macleod Trail S.E.), Shawnessy Library (333 Shawville Blvd. S.E.), and Saddletowne Library (7555 Falconridge Blvd. N.E.).

Part of the reason behind the free afternoon event is to get fans of all ages ready for the Dec. 15 release of the new film in the series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. But mainly it’s to once again reinforce the importance of libraries and what they do in this day and age.

“Libraries are gathering places, full of varied resources and relevant programs. Our upcoming Star Wars Day is a fun opportunity for us to bring fans together,” said Heather Robertson, director of service design, in a release.

“We’re excited to welcome Calgarians of all ages to Central, Shawnessy, and Saddletowne libraries, as partner organizations, Library staff, and volunteers help us make this an afternoon to remember.”

Some of the activities on tap at the locations include craft stations, how-to demonstrations on programming mini-droids, virtual reality displays and an opportunity to explore the books, graphic novels, electronic resources, audiobooks and DVDs from the Star Wars universe.

They’re also partnering with the famed 501st Legion – Badlands Garrison to make sure there are Stormtroopers available for selfies and Red Deer R2-D2 to have a life-sized version of the droid that you’re looking for.

And, as they note in the release, “family-friendly cosplay is strongly encouraged.”
