Top picks for getting out Dec. 14 – 20 including The Nutcracker, Tom Jackson, All That Remains and more

Hey! There is no denying the fact that holidays are upon us and everything is full-on with parties and get-togethers – but if you’re looking for an excuse to get out of your commitments then look no further. Let me be your “out.”

Just announced: Steve Miller Band with Peter Frampton at the Saddledome April 20, and Ministry! Ministry with Chelsea Wolfe at The Palace on April 1. Tickets for both shows on sale Friday morning, check links for details.

Thursday: Tom Phillips CD Release takes place at The Ironwood, should be a great show — check out Mary-Lynn Wardle’s story on it here. Charlotte’s Web continues at ATP, it’s on until the 31st but it’s selling out so make sure you get your tickets soon — check out MY story on it here.

Friday: Alberta Ballet presents The Nutcracker until Dec. 24, Peter & The Wolves with The Confusionaires at Mikey’s on 12th tonight, The Funk Hunters present Funk the Halls at The Palace and Crooked Spies release their sophomore album at Nite Owl. Lots of options!

Saturday: Get your bowl on (that sounded weird) with Christmas Punk Rock Bowling presented by the Major Minor Music Project at Paradise Lanes. Lots of great bands, bowling and a good cause will give you the warm fuzzies — guaranteed. More fuzzies can be found (not literally) at The Rec Room with The Jingles, Calgary’s premiere holiday band! I just dubbed them that!

Sunday: Head on over to National Westhills for the Wild Rose Christmas Shoebox Party because hey, ’tis the season for good deeds and what not. If you’re heading out towards Banff, Tom Jackson: Christmas 150 show will be at the Banff Centre. Staying in town? Hit up the Perfectly Frank Christmas presented by Jazz Orchestra at River Park Church (two shows to choose from, early or evening!), or maybe All That Remains with Throw the Fight at The Marquee is more your speed. Perhaps you prefer Oscar Lopez at the Ironwood? You do you.

Tuesday: The fun (and jazz!) continues with The Willows and George Koller presented by DJD & JazzYYC. The festive never ends.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine – especially at this time of year! Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
