Top picks for getting out Dec. 21 – 26 including theatre, jazz, metal, and a Christmas bash thrown in for good measure

Sunday and Monday are going to be a bit quiet, everyone, so best to get yer rah-rahs out this weekend, recoup for those two days, then get back at it. Here are some thoughts as to how you might spend your rah-rahs:

Theatre galore! There’s still time to get in on some great holiday theatre before Xmas and the New Year, so check out Charlotte’s Web at ATP, A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary, The Santaland Diaries at Lunchbox Theatre, and let’s throw some dance in there — The Nutcracker at Alberta Ballet.

Thursday: The Listening Room presents Lisa Anderson & Simon TJ at Lolita’s Lounge for some jazzy goodness. Over at the Ironwood you can take in Allistair Elliot’s Christmas Concert, or head to The Blues Can for Mike Watson (no relation, but he’s a great guy!) & the 6L6’s. Wow. Inglewood is hopping tonight. But so is Macleod Trail! Punk vs. Metal: Our Old Ways with Dethgod, Western Death & Detherus over at Distortion. Lotsa death. Deth.

Friday: Jory Kinjo eases you into the holiday at the Ironwood. Like a boss. Or you can party like a Dude — or The Dudes — as everyone’s favourite local rockers celebrate with their annual Christmas Special at The Palace, with pals Port Juvee and Pizza Bath.

Saturday: The Brent Tyler Christmas Bash with Brooke Wylie takes place TWICE today at 2 & 9 p.m. at the Ironwood (geez, Ironwood! Busy!), over at Without Papers Pizza there will be none other than Rondel Roberts and The Torchettes will celebrate the release of their new album with a show at Dickens Pub. If you’re looking for a celebration of the life of one of the local indie scene’s early pioneers, head to the memorial for Funeral Factory member Greg Kucheran at Festival Hall at 7 p.m. — there will be tears, there will be laughs, there will be fond stories of a man who will be missed.

Sunday & Monday: Family time. Eating time. Nap time. Star Wars time.

Tuesday: Head to Banff! Enjoy the day, check out Double Fuzz at the Rose & Crown Pub that night. Unless you have to work the next day, in which case plan your evening accordingly.

Wednesday: Murda Beatz with Disoriental, DJ Dine & Dash & 99Unknown are all at Commonwealth. Do it up right.

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
