ArtsTop Picks

Top picks for getting out Dec. 28 – Jan. 3 including The Ashley Hundred, Matt Better, NYE events and, of course, the High Performance Rodeo

You know, one way to beat the cold is to get out and show it who’s boss (she types, while sitting under a duvet). If you’re looking for ways to fill your time off, there is plenty to do in town this weekend and into next week (except Monday — just make sure you have snacks on hand Monday and watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy or something).

Thursday: Matt Better will be at the Ironwood for your musical pleasure (it’s a Matthew Good tribute act!), and Greg Jr. Demchuk & The Du-Rite Aces will be delivering all kinds of greatness at The Blues Can. Also, and this applies year-round, you should take the time to check out some of the amazing art exhibitions that are happening around town at galleries like Stride, Christine Klassen, Newzones, Esker Foundation, Glenbow… they are all indoor activities and the furthest thing from a shopping mall you can find.

Friday: Honeymoon Suite and The Headpins at the Grey Eagle! If you’re burning in love, or if your love is like a lethal weapon, or if you have a new girl now (I could go on, sadly) this is the show for you. But maybe you’re not “of a certain age” and want to see what all the cool kids are up to? Head to the Nite Owl for The Ashley Hundred, 36? and Future Womb or get yourself down to Distortion for Hazzerd, InVertigo, Puttin’ on the Foil and Southbound Crow.

Saturday: Above and Beyond plays the Big Four Building, or maybe you’d prefer to head to the Ironwood for Luke Dowler with Bebe Buckskin. Only you know what you like.

Sunday: New Year’s Eve celebrations! There are countless options in town for you to ring in the new year, including Danny Vacon, Pegasus Performances, The Trews, fancy parties, DJs galore… so just check out my amazing page of events and see if anything catches your eye. There. Sorted.

Monday: Drink fluids. Eat crackers. Recover. Or, if you want a little hair of the dog, head over to the Ironwood at 8 p.m. for the annual Hank Over event, featuring some of the scene’s best players.

Wednesday: It begins… the 32nd Annual High Performance Rodeo launches today with Hot Brown Honey, followed for the next four weeks by over 20 amazing productions. Not sure what to take in? Read my interview with producer Kelly Reay and get an idea of what’s out there, then head to hprodeo.ca to check out the schedule. Lots to do in January, take your vitamins.

I say this every week, but it’s true – there is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
