David Byrne, Preoccupations, MGMT announce May tour dates for Calgary

We’ll take the showers, if the excellent May Calgary concert options keep bloomin’.

New spring dates have just been announced for legendary artist David Byrne, local boys Preoccupations, and Connecticut electro pop act MGMT.

Byrne, known to many as the frontman for iconic ’70s and ’80s act Talking Heads, is bringing his world tour to the city for a May 21 show at the Jubilee Auditorium. Tickets for the concert in support of his forthcoming solo album American Utopia due out March 9, start at $71 (plus service charges) and go on sale Friday, Jan. 19 from livenation.com or by phone at 1-855-985-5000.

Also just announced are two dates from the homegrown band Preoccupations. The quartet, which grew out of beloved act Women, will have a two-night stand in downtown fave The Palomino Smokehouse May 4 and 5. Tickets also go on sale Friday, Jan. 19 and are $15 from myshowpass (May 4 here and May 5 here).

The band will be touring their third album — second under the Preoccupations name after retiring the Viet Cong moniker — cheekily titled New Material, which will be released in Canada on the Calgary Flemish Eye label March 23. You can pre-order it here and you can watch the video for the first single Espionage below.

And last, but not least, MGMT will be making their way to the city for a May 9 date at the Big Four Building to support their new album Little Dark Age, which will be released Nov. 9. Tickets for this one are $47.75 plus service charges and are also available Friday, Jan. 19 from Ticketmaster.

MGMT is the project of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. Over the past 15 years, they’ve released a trio of other albums and earned a pair of Grammy nominations including in 2010 for Best New Artist.
