Top picks for getting out Jan. 18-24 including BIG Winter Classic, Undercover and Bruce Cockburn

This past week dropped a metric truckload of concert announcements on us, from David Byrne to MGMT to Preoccupations … check out Mike Bell’s rundown on all of that here. Now, on to the upcoming week!

Thursday: Have you heard of a little thing called the High Performance Rodeo? IT’S STILL ON! Great plays such as Inner Elder, Empire of the Son, Salt Water Moon, and you should definitely check out I’m Not Here — I’ve heard nothing but great things! Also, BIG Winter Classic kicks off today and runs through Sunday with so many great bands, I can’t even. I CAN’T EVEN! Check out their schedule and plan your attack. Or, head over to the King Eddy for the Alberta Spotlight series featuring Raleigh with Crystal Eyes. SO MUCH! Thursday is the new Saturday, people.

Friday: More theatre! Head to Vertigo theatre to catch Rebecca Northan and Bruce Horak’s latest audience interactive production Undercover! It’s running until Feb. 11, and it’s a fresh show each night. Deeeeelightful. There’s also Mr. Sipp presented by the PCL Blues Series over at the Engineered Air Theatre, so you should sleuth then blues. I’m making it up on the fly here.

Saturday: At the Ironwood Amy Bishop celebrates The Launch — her tv debut that will no doubt gain her a whole league of new fans — and over at the Jubilee you can take in Alberta Ballet’s Shaping Sound. Sounds like a great night!

Sunday: National Geographic Live — A View from above with Terry Virts (astronauts!) at the Jack Singer at 2pm, and then in the evening head to the Bella Concert Hall for Antonio Pompa Baldi. Culture yourself! Wait, that sounded weird…

Tuesday: Bruce Cockburn’s Bone On Bone Tour with guest Nefe hits the Jack Singer.

Wednesday: The CPO presents Classic Albums Live: The Beatles — Abbey Road at the Jack Singer. K. Flay’s Every Where is Some Where Tour with Sir Sly will be at The Palace. Same same but very different?

There is so much more going on in this city than you can imagine. Check out all of the listings to plan your week ahead!
