Calgary Expo: Limited Edition set for September

Slowly and cautiously, the world is coming alive, shaking off its COVID cloak of cautiousness.

First the announcement that the Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth is a go. Then news dropped that the Calgary Folk Music Festival will return to Prince’s Island as a smaller, more manageable Summer Serenades Concert Series.

Now, some great news for the geeks — Calgary Comics and Entertainment Expo will return in a limited edition Sept.10-12, 2021 in the BMO Centre, on Stampede Park.

Only 25,000 tickets will be made available for the pared-down, two-day event, which still promises “shopping, cosplay, celebrity and creator guests, and favourite featured areas like Artists Alley and the Cosplay Red Carpet” — albeit all done according to protocols, with organizers promising to update health and safety plans 30 days before the expo.

“We understand the only way any of this happens is if we all strictly observe and deeply respect the restrictions and recommendations made by public health authorities,” FAN EXPO HQ Vice President. Andrew Moyes said in a release. “We’re actively developing and continually revising our health and safety plans as the situation evolves and feel confident participants will clearly understand what to expect when they received our plan in early August. There will be no surprises, and lots of time to adjust as needed.”

And because real heroes sometimes wear scrubs, Sept. 10 is designated Healthcare Heroes Day at Calgary Expo, “in honour of those who made this celebration possible.” Healthcare workers who have a valid workplace ID are asked to sign up to receive free admission on that day.

“Events like Calgary Expo are so much more than just fun festivals of fandom; for many they are vital touchpoints for community and for fostering a sense of belonging. After so much time apart, we’re thrilled to be able to provide that for fans once again and want to acknowledge all the healthcare heroes who went above and beyond to make it possible,” Moyes said. “As we take the final necessary steps on the path to a safe re-opening, we encourage everyone to stay vigilant and keep taking care of one another. We can’t wait to celebrate with you this September!”

Tickets for this year’s Calgary Expo: Limited Edition go on sale June 22, at 10 a.m. from calgaryexpo.com. Those who bought tickets and passes to prior cancelled Calgary Expo events and didn’t take a refund, “will have their tickets automatically moved to this event, and have a spot secured. Should they not be able to attend, refunds are available.”

Following that, the remainder of the 25,000 tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis.Following that, the remainder of the 25,000 tickets will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis.
