at the last judgement we will all be trees – a photography and sculpture exhibition by Julya Hajnoczky

September 9, 2017 @ 10:00 am - September 30, 2017 @ 5:00 pm MDT

Part of the 14th Annual East Side Studio Crawl Sept 16, free screening of the film The Call of the Forest Sept 29 at 7pm.

A solo exhibition of miniature sculptures and large-scale photographic prints inspired by the tiniest details discovered on an expedition through Canadian forest ecosystems.

The work you’ll see was begun by Calgary artist Julya Hajnoczky just a year ago, thanks to a
Small Experiments project grant from the Calgary Arts Development Authority. Hajnoczky built a small teardrop trailer (affectionately dubbed the Al Fresco Science Machine), designed to be a combination camper and mobile natural science lab. Armed with a microscope, plant press, field guides and specimen vials, she struck out on a three-week journey, travelling to the West Coast and back, spending every day exploring a new landscape and meeting people to gather and share knowledge about their local ecosystems.

The material collected on that research expedition is the basis for this exhibition. Found objects like driftwood and pinecones form the foundation for a series of miniature house sculptures – the haven in the forest that many people yearn for. Alongside these enchanting little sculptures, a series of very large photographic prints (2’ x 3’) will be shown. These images are made by scanning collected botanical specimens at very high resolution, and the resulting large-scale prints offer the viewer the rare opportunity to see, close up, the extraordinary details of what are really common forest dwellers – lichens, seed pods, pinecones, mosses and more.
