The Sadies – New Seasons

Outside Music

In the past decade The Sadies have evolved from masters of instrumental spaghetti-western twang to psych rockers with a penchant for vintage folk rock like The Byrds. Along the way they became quintessential sidemen backing everyone from Neko Case and Jon Langford to Jon Spencer and Andre Williams. All that and more comes to the fore on their sixth studio album. New Seasons is one of those exceptional albums that is able to capture every facet of what a band does best and infuse it into every track. Frantic fretwork is balanced by longing country crooning liquid ballads face off against tightly wound instrumental snapshots and searing vibrato meets tumbling lead lines. Given the timid nature of the band’s past few releases New Seasons is surprisingly filled with energy. It’s like listening to a greatest hits record by The Sadies with all new songs.
