Future of the Left – Curses!

Too Pure

Three years a new name a new member the same old same old. That’s the easiest way to describe the new project by Andrew Falkous and Jack Egglestone (formerly two-thirds of Welsh rockers McLusky). A lot has changed at least superficially for Falkous and Egglestone but it hasn’t had any effect on the music which displays the same beefy riffs bombastic drums surly shouts and prickish sense of humour that made McLusky a cult favourite.

This familiarity is a mixed blessing. On the one hand few bands have been able to nail angry rock as solidly and come across as such loveable dicks as McLusky did in their prime so there is a certain joy in returning to their hostile explosive stomping grounds. On the other hand it would have been nice for Falkous and Egglestone to at least make an attempt — beyond adding the occasional synthesizer to their standard fare — to mature. Only a few seconds into lead track “The Lord Hates a Coward” Falkous starts ranting “violence will solve everything” and it becomes clear that creative much less intellectual growth isn’t in the cards.

Oh well. Curses! is still decently put together and it provides a great outlet for blowing off steam; who cares if there’s nothing more to it than that? Why would a band want to grow up anyway when they could just keep singing about how some dude named Colin is a pussy?
