Outrageous Cherry – s/t

Scratch

For their past two albums Outrageous Cherry have been dealing in retread British Invasion retro rock and lowest common denominator power pop. Now that their self-titled 1994 full-length has been reissued it’s clear that there was a fall from grace. Back in the day this four piece rocked Sonic Youth-style noise Velvet Underground grooves and a slow grinding urgency that is as compelling as it is catchy. It’s not perfect. Some of the playing is downright sloppy. While the mid-fi party production is earnest enough in this day of dB-pushing garage rock records there are more than a few times where the album feels limp by comparison. Still given that this album is 13 years old it stands up pretty well. Better in fact than anything they have put out since.
