Making affordable housing happen

Re: “Affordable housing cash falls short” by Adrian Morrow News June 5-11 2008.

As a followup to your article we wanted to give you some additional information regarding the Inglewood Residence currently under construction. The 114-suite apartment and 10 townhomes are being built by joint venture partners: The Calgary Region Home Builders Foundation the Calgary Homeless Foundation and Horizon Housing Society (HHS). HHS will be the owner and operator of the residence upon completion of construction.

HHS is the largest non-profit housing organization in Calgary housing over 450 people with mental illness and other special needs in five apartment buildings and nine group homes. HHS is a strong supporter of the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness and was involved in its creation. It should be noted however that construction on the Inglewood Residence began before the 10 Year Plan was created.

Along with our joint venture partners we are looking forward to the opening of the Inglewood Residence in April 2009. It will be a high-quality yet affordable housing complex with beautiful green space in an established Calgary community providing homes for individuals and families with special needs.

Our joint venture partners and HHS agree that more needs to be done in providing housing and this requires political and public will and adequate funding to make that happen.
