Fort Knox Five – Radio Free DC

Fort Knox Recordings

In 1968 the civil rights movement in the United States teetered on the edge only to have assassinations riots and the re-election of Richard Nixon derail it for 40 years. Now hot on the heels of Barack Obama’s election win Washington D.C.’s Fort Knox Five’s debut album creates a party funk atmosphere that picks up right where things left off oh so long ago. Dischord Records hardcore punk champion Ian Svenonius channels George Clinton on "How to Start a Band" a D.I.Y. funk manifesto. The real attraction though is guest vocalist Mustafa Akbar whose delivery dominates the four songs he contributes to. It’s a bit of a disappointment that the band is outshone by its guests but this doesn’t derail the album.
