Metal Blade
Odd Senses is the third release from chaotic and creatively cacophonous metal mavens Psyopus. Yet when it all boils down — or explodes as the case is here — it’s really just another blast of aural insanity that varies little from their first two efforts Ideas of Reference and Puzzling Encounters Considered . To pare that down Psyopus is a jumbled and jarring attack that plays out like freeform jazz distorted and amplified to the point of redlining. Imagine the technical perfection of Dillinger Escape Plan on the same drugs that pushed hardcore punks Zeke to the limit or the ultra-prog shredding of Dragonforce if they had balls and were inspired by freakish experimental noise. It’s technically stunning and kinda cool but extremely trying on the patience of anyone even remotely interested in meter and melody over speed and the number of odd time signatures that can be crammed into two minutes. Sure songs have titles such as “Medusa” “X And Y” “Choker Chain” and “The Burning Halo” but the only difference between them to the undiscerning are the names. Musically there’s nothing diverse in hyperactive scales unpredictable drumming and overall excess.
