Burger Hunt – Tommy Burger Bar

Tommy Burger Bar

While most would say that the hamburger is quintessentially American I beg to differ. Canadians rock the burger and I’ve decided to head out on a quest to find Calgary’s best. Read along as I eat my way around town over the next year or so. Please e-mail burger suggestions or recommendations to darelleats@gmail.com or post your own opinions at ffwdweekly.com .

Burger: Tommy Boy — two six-ounce patties topped with Swiss aged cheddar and provolone cheeses on a sourdough bun. The meat was well-seasoned and the produce was chilled a subtle but nice touch. Near the end it got a little messy but overall it’s a tasty burger.

Sides: Classic diner fare like fries onion rings and shakes.

Atmosphere: Tommy Burger Bar floats the line between old-school diner and family-friendly restaurant. It is a good place to meet with friends have a few cold beverages and enjoy good burgers.

Menu: Six “chef’s burgers” and do-it-yourself options that include avocado guacamole pineapple sprouts sautéed mushrooms and onions fried eggs four types of bacon and five types of cheeses. Your choice of sourdough or multigrain buns or lettuce wraps. Other options like salmon or tuna burgers.

Decision: Tommy Burger Bar serves up enough options to please most burger enthusiasts but at $14 a pop the Tommy Boy doesn’t quite pack enough bang for my burger buck.
