Mini fest and major talent

Diana Krall Jennifer Scott and Pat Hatherly await local jazz fans this month

Get set for CD releases concert tours and even a mini jazz festival — although there’s nothing “mini” about the calibre of the performers in town this month. April 15 for example marks the launch of Diana Krall’s cross-Canada tour promoting her newest CD Quiet Nights with a show at the Jubilee Auditorium. Krall’s website describes the CD as “a romantic and intimate journey through the lush textures of her ballads and bossa novas.” Feeling romantic? Don’t miss this gig.

While you’re at it make sure your must-see list includes the long-awaited debut CD from Calgary singer-songwriter Pat Hatherly. Hatherly’s joined by a who’s who of Calgary’s best performers from Cindy Macleod Sherry Kennedy and Clea Roddick to Deanna Dubbin Ian Tyson and others — and those are just the vocalists. Watch for Brian Buchanan Terry Medd Brad Steckel Charlie Hase and others on the instrumentals. It’s all going down at the Ironwood Stage and Grill on Thursday April 23.

If that’s not enough for you check downtown at the Cantos Music Foundation where the Jazz Is Society is presenting the April/May Mini-Vocal JazzFest. The festival kicks off on Friday April 10 with Vancouver jazz pianist and singer Jennifer Scott. She’ll be joined by musicians John Reid Simon Fisk and John De Waal. Scott has recorded five CDs and specializes in jazz blues and world music. She’s performed with the likes of Clark Terry Don Thompson and Hugh Fraser so jazz fans are in for a treat with this two-night gig. The festival organizers will follow this up with the appearance of New York City’s Brenda Earle on May 1 and 2 at the same venue with Reid De Waal and Kodi Hutchinson backing the performance. Earle is a graduate of Toronto’s York University jazz program and counts Carmen McCrae and Ella Fitzgerald as two of her strongest influences.

Putting the vocalists aside you’ll have the chance to see one of Calgary’s best jazz guitarists Peter Manley at a two-night gig at Beat Niq on April 17 and 18. Joined by Rubim de Toledo Tyler Hornby Steve Fletcher and Jim Brenan Manley will be preparing for a fall recording session. Keep your ears open for news of the release date.
