Your guide to the week in music
Local duo Sit Still haven’t been around for long (their only gigs to date were at the last two Factory Parties) but they make a heck of an impression. Both guitarist Aaron McInnis and drummer Matt Doherty are in local post-rock outfit Lint but their sound couldn’t be much farther removed from their other band. McInnis uses his guitar to buzz melodically around drummer Doherty’s intricate IDM beats — it may sound minimal but it’s more than enough to make your jaw drop. They’re opening for Dave King’s one-man synth-rock band Longwalkshortdock at Broken City on Thursday May 21 — it’s a perfect chance to get in on the ground floor with an exceptionally promising local act.
On Friday May 22 one of Canada’s finest pop-rock songwriters will be stopping by The Marquee Room. Danny Michel is still touring hard behind Feather Fur and Fin which he self-released last year and if you haven’t seen him live yet you owe it to yourself to check him out. Michel is one of those performers whose charisma kicks in before he plays a single note and given that his new album is as strong as anything in his catalogue you’ll be justified going into this one with some high expectations.
Calgary’s Cripple Creek Fairies may be more about pummelling their way through garage-y rockers than polishing pop ditties but there’s a reason they’re mainstays of the local rock scene — and it ain’t just their trademark aviator caps. They’ll be at The Underground on May 22 with Damn Dirty Ape for those who are feeling a bit rowdier.
Lastly if you’re getting tired of hearing the same classics trotted out and want to see where modern classical music is headed the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is holding its first ever festival of new music dubbed Hear & Now: A New Music Festival . The festival which takes place on May 21 and 22 will include the world debuts of two pieces along with an assortment of innovative pieces from the last three decades.
