Polaris Music Prize 2009 – Long Listening Part 1

The Long List for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize was released yesterday. Like I’ve said before I sit on the national jury and here’s what my ballot ended up looked like:

  • Quest for Fire – S/T
  • Bruce Peninsula – A Mountain Is a Mouth
  • Chad VanGaalen – Soft Airplane
  • Rae Spoon – Superioryouareinferior
  • Bell Orchestre – As Seen Through Windows

As you can see 4 of my 5 picks made the final 40. As expected Quest for Fire was tragically overlooked by the other jurors but whatever. I guess Bison is an OK substitute but I doubt it will get my vote…

Omissions that disappoint me: Julie Doiron Clues.

Inclusions that please me: Timber Timbre Beast Handsome Furs $100

Anyways I’m on a mission right now to listen to all of the Long List titles that I never gave the time of day in the run-up to make sure I’m not missing anything spectacular. I will try to post a few here every day in the run-up to the due date for my second ballot which helps to determine the Short List.

Hey Rosetta! – Into Your Lungs

I expected this to be pretty bland Two Hours Traffic -like rock built around the standard East Coast blueprint but I am pleasantly surprised. It’s pretty straightforward but it’s definitely not predictable. It has some healthy-ass keyboard-driven jams a-la (sorry no time to figure out how to do an accent-grave on here) Hold Steady . The middle part dragged a bit but there were enough high points that I might come back to it.
