Wilderness area devastated by ATV use

Environmental groups are preparing a proposal requesting that the province designate a large portion of the Castle-Crown wilderness as parks after a report found the area is being devastated by unrestricted all-terrain-vehicle (ATV) use and is slated for large-scale logging this winter.

“It is one of the richest ecological and geological areas in the province also being the headwaters of the Oldman river system” says Greg Belland of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society the organization that commissioned the report.

Dave Ealey communications director for Alberta Sustainable Resource Development says he isn’t aware of any logging in “sensitive” areas and the province has designated ATV trails in this wilderness 250 kilometres southwest of Calgary. “There are going to be issues where people go places they shouldn’t but we are working to make sure that is minimized” he says.
