Do Make Say Think – Other Truths

To borrow a joke from a friend-of-a-friend of mine Do Make Say Think is “one Feist short of a Broken Social Scene.” In record reviewer speak that means the band’s polished post-rock instrumentals need only the former Calgarian’s croons or Kevin Drew’s caterwauls to sound identical to the Arts and Crafts indie-rock collective.

Unfortunately (and ironically) Other Thoughts Truths is also lacking in ideas. Sure these four tracks (titled “Do” “Make” “Say” and “Think” — nice one guys) are pleasant enough but you’d be hard-pressed to remember a riff a melody or even a moment once the album is done. The CliffsNotes: “Do” is a little more “rock” than “post” with its Mogwai-lite shredding. “Make” emphasizes the band’s jazzy drums while “Say” gets woozy with wordless chanting from Akron/Family. “Think” is a straight-up snoozer.

Past albums have found DMST achieving a transcendent triumphant lift-off and there’s a good chance the live show still rules. Sadly this one just feels phoned in.
