Ald. Joe Ceci call it quits supports Hawkesworth

Ward 9 Ald. Joe Ceci announced this morning he’s done with municipal politics and will not seek re-election after serving on council for 15 years.

"I have some ideas about what I want to do but I haven’t made any decisions" says Ceci. "I’m going to give it some time and reflect on what this 15 years has meant and try to figure out what’s next."

Ceci graduated from the Univeristy of Calgary in 1980 with a degree in social work. Fifteen years later he entered politics winning the Ward 9 seat in 1995.

He says he’ll likely support fellow civic politician Bob Hawkesworth should the Ward 4 representative decide to run for mayor. Hawkesworth announced last month he would not run again for alderman leading many to speculate he would seek the mayor’s chair this fall.

"I think he’s the kind of person that is needed now in Calgary" says Ceci. "After so much growth we really need someone who can pull it all together and re-focus us and ensure things like quality of life don’t get forgotten."

This leaves urban planner and Ingelwood community association president Gian-Carlo Carra as the sole contender for the Ward 9 seat.
