Inhabitants – A Vacant Lot

Drip Audio

The newest release from the Inhabitants is dominated by a haunting dream-like quality. J.P. Carter’s horn work and Dave Sikula’s guitar set the mood with the ethereal opening track "Far Away in Old Words" and echoed in later pieces like "What About the Water?" and "Pacific Central." Don’t get the impression that it’s a totally calm ride though — Inhabitants plumbs some dark dissonant territory in tunes like "Journey of the Loach" and the ominous "Let Youth Be Served."

These and other tracks give the CD layers a movement from calm into the frantic distorted soundscapes that flow naturally from the improvisations. The eight tracks in A Vacant Lot often recall Miles Davis’s In a Silent Way but this CD explores major terrain beyond that initial comparison. It’s a fascinating and layered release from Skye Brooks (drums) Pete Schmitt (bass) Carter and Sikula. It’s one of those CDs you rediscover each time you listen to it.
