Flaming Lips coming to Calgary

Looks like alt-rock’s most wonderful weirdos The Flaming Lips are headed back to Calgary. After providing the highlight of the first Calgary Virgin Fest the band will be playing Mac Hall on Thursday September 23 with likeminded pop eccentrics Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti .

Why is this such good news? First off the Lips are widely known for their elabourate stage show which typically includes smoke machines strobe lights Teletubbies naked ladies and Coyne’s man-sized hamster ball. Second and more important the band’s last album Embryonic was the best thing the Lips have released in years a fantastically noisy return to its psychedelic roots.

This summer was already looking amazing with upcoming concerts from The Heavy Boris and Russian Circles plus strong lineups at Sled Island (which just added GZA and No Age to its roster) and the folk fest . Good to have something to look forward to when summer’s over too.
