Soft Revolution
Of all the bands in Canada’s current indie rock elite few have enjoyed the longevity and commitment to stylistic consistency of Montreal’s Stars. True to form the band’s latest The Five Ghosts is as good as anything it has ever put out. After the slight letdown of 2007’s In Our Bedroom After The War The Five Ghosts features strong songs from singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan and as usual the two are best when they duet. When a group’s signature sound is this classic there’s no need to change too much to avoid sounding dated but Stars varies it up enough effortlessly moving from full drama (the staggering “Dead Hearts”) to breezy electro doo-wop (“Changes”) and dance-pop. Modern sexy emotional and instantly catchy the only thing surprising about this album is that this band can continue to sound so fresh.
