The Real McKenzies – Shine Not Burn

Fat Wreck Chords

The musical equivalent of going commando under your kilt Shine Not Burn sees the lads stripped-down to the roots; going acoustic in the name of trying something different. Less toned-down than you’d expect the entire album was recorded live during a performance last year at Wild at Heart in southern Germany where the wayward Vancouverites are known for playing raucous two-hour-long sets in the nude.

Twenty-one Celtic-pride inspired punk-rock classics are spirited over the hills and far away by a choir of upright basses pennywhistles and of course Matt MacNasty’s bagpipes. Hanging in together as thick as thieves and good woollen socks The Real McKenzies tap into hereditary Scottish singalongs such as “My Bonny” and “Scots Wha’ Ha’e” with the same heart and vigour used to ignite modern themes like “Bitch Off the Money” “Whiskey Scotch Whiskey” and “Get Lost.” A departure from the comparative track-by-track sterility of the recording studio this seventh outing for the McKenzies provides an all-too-brief glimpse into a Canadian ceilidh transported to Kreuzberg.
