Tradition – In Small Gestures So Huge Love is Everywhere

James Klassen under his pseudonym Tradition has returned with his second record proper with Toronto collective-minded label The Blocks Recording Club (home to Canadian indie heavyweights such as Bob Wiseman and Final Fantasy). Compared to his self-titled debut’s upbeat noise-driven weirdo folk songs the subtle almost meditative tracks contained on In Small Gestures So Huge Love is Everywhere sound like the work of a completely different artist.

Klassen’s latest collection retains the raw quality of his earlier output but when paired with the quiet introspection of tracks such as B-side opener “This’ll Never Last” the results are winning. Gestures in effect makes his old style sound amateur. It’s as if you’ve stumbled upon the audio diary of a friend: It’s hard to listen to because of its personal and haunted contents but no matter how hard you try you just can’t seem to put it away.
