Eric Chenaux – Warm Weather with Ryan Driver

On his follow up to 2008’s Sloppy Ground Toronto balladeer and improvisational guitar master Eric Chenaux has ditched the electric guitar and array of pedals that have served him so well in the past in favour of a nylon-stringed acoustic and tasteful accompaniment from pianist and keyboardist Ryan Driver. The result is even more delicate than his already ethereal repertoire and further proof of his stature as a songwriter of the highest order.

Driver’s keys earn their part in the album’s title by tastefully working their way between Chenaux’s intricate guitar lines and his slightly reedy croon. Echoing the melody at times and flirting with dissonance at others Driver seems to intuitively understand Chenaux’s unorthodox approach to his instrument and the two of them together cohere into some beautifully crystalline song structures. The occasional backing harmony or subtle percussion track only add to one of 2010’s most hauntingly beautiful releases.
