Montana’s Cookhouse

Burger : Big & Bold Brisket Burger ($11.99) — A sirloin patty and a fresh bun topped with brisket crispy Cajun onions melted cheddar cheese Texas barbecue sauce lettuce and tomato. Served with a dill pickle spear on the side.

Sides : Choice of fries house or Caesar salad.

Atmosphere : Montana’s feels like you’re in a lodge or a wood cabin. There are moose heads on the walls and even a truck — not so common in most cabins — sticking out of the ceiling.

Menu : It’s a very meat-centric place (the first four appetizers have meat in their name) with lots of carnivorous options such as ribs chicken steaks burgers and sandwiches. There are also a few fish pasta and salad options for those not wanting to eat like Fred Flintstone.

Decision : I really enjoyed this burger. It took some serious squishing to reduce it to an edible height as the fried onion crisps brought the entire thing to a pre-compression height of at least 10 cm. The beef-on-beef action was a nice change from the more common bacon-on-beef combination. The brisket was perfectly tender pulling apart with each bite and added a nice smokiness that was accentuated by the barbecue sauce. The produce didn’t have a huge impact but I would have complained had they been omitted. The chipotle firecracker burger on the menu also caught my eye and seems worth checking out.
