It’s been six years since the 2004 release of Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall’s breakthrough million-selling release Eye to the Telescope . Over that period of time of course change is to be expected and that’s evident on Tiger Suit her third release. The followup to 2007’s Drastic Fantastic she didn’t skimp on recording electing to work at Berlin’s legendary Hansa Studios where U2’s Achtung Baby and landmark releases by David Bowie Iggy Pop and Siouxsie and the Banshees were recorded. Whew.
Tunstall’s sound as ever is still eminently danceable but its title is apt: This release showcases her digging into growlier vocals. These changes make for a more layered sound — and solid tracks such as “Difficulty” are ear-catching — but the tone is set by CD chant-a-long celebratory opener “Uuummannaq Song.” Mid-album “Fade Like a Shadow” proves to be yet another powerful track but contradictory to its title; there’s clearly no danger of Tunstall ever fading away. Great album.
