Order: Extreme Mombo Combo ($7.99). Choice of two slices. I had the classic pepperoni (with both dry-cured and hot pepperoni and a blend of cheeses) and Szechuan chicken (marinated chicken red peppers snow peas zucchini herbs sesame seeds and a blend of cheeses).
Crust: While I fully admit to purchasing whole wheat breads I find whole wheat products can far too often be gluey dry or a combination of both and generally bland. Luckily that is not the case with Flying Wedge’s whole wheat herb-infused crusts. Loaded with flavour it reminds me of focaccia.
Sauce: There was a lot more sauce on the classic pepperoni slice than the other which makes sense to me. It’s nice to see thought used in the creation of these pizzas. It might seem trivial but something as simple as how much sauce should be on each pizza type makes a huge difference in the end. With that said the sauce itself was rich thick and tangy.
Toppings: Even though it’s listed that the classic pepperoni comes with two varieties I only noticed the spicy one. It overpowered its milder counterpart and I’m not convinced a slice with only the hot version would taste very different. The bulk of the cheese used is mozzarella but the cheddar adds both colour and flavour. As for the Szechuan slice I think it could have used a few more veggies. It has a nice zesty kick without being crazy spicy.
Dining options: Eat in take out or delivery
Decision: I found the pepperoni slice to be a little too salty for my taste and that’s saying something coming from a guy whose sodium-intake levels will preclude me from getting a goitre. The Szechuan is a unique creation and worth trying. The sesame seeds are a nice touch. Getting the two-slice combo was a wise and economical way to check out two of Flying Wedge’s pizzas. If I lived within the delivery area I would definitely take advantage of that. But honestly I’m not likely to go out of my way to this suburban location. Basically this is a great choice for area residents. Hopefully they will open up more locations across town. This pizza gets four out of six slices.
