Order: Stavros Special ($21.95). A medium 10-inch pizza with pepperoni ham salami mushrooms shrimp beef green peppers tomatoes onions black olives and pineapple.
Crust: It was nicely browned and not too thick but it was a bit moist towards the middle. I recommend using caution when picking a piece up or perhaps use a knife and fork — eek!
Sauce: The sauce is made in-house and you can tell. It turned out to be one of my favourite sauces to date. It was thick spicy and actually made a difference to the overall taste of the pizza.
Toppings: With over 10 toppings things can get out of control pretty quickly but the pizza came loaded without being overwhelmed. The cheese was super gooey and stringy as well as properly browned around the outer edges. The vegetables added some colour and improved the overall presentation.
Dining options: Eat in takeout or delivery.
Decision: I really enjoyed this pizza. On paper it reads like many other “special” pizzas in town but it quickly skyrocketed in the rankings when I tasted it. I appreciated the note on Stavros’s menu advising to allow 20 to 30 minutes for the pizza to be made. It set realistic expectations and showed they are willing to take the necessary time to prepare their pies. Sure you can get blast-heated pizzas that are ready in seconds elsewhere but alternatively good things happen to those who wait. This one gets a solid five out of six slices.
