2011 Sled Island curator Ian Svenonius returns with more sassy garage-janglin’ real talk on his second full-length outing from the Gang. This time the topics have shifted from liberty and clueless rock-crit interviews to practical love the privileged and music itself. Once again Ian S. spits so much truth that it’s hard not to see him as some kind of prophet dressed in a snazzy suit dancing shoes and a pompadour.
The sonic backdrop for these sermons is the predictable mix of minimalist rhythm and blues organ squelch and hand-jive guitar flip-outs. Anyone who caught him at last year’s Sled Island will likely remember the anthems “Youth Is Wasted On The Young” and “It’s A Hard Hard Job (Keeping Everybody High)” but the two-part “Detroit Music” “Not Good Enough” and this album’s spooky title track are sure to become crowd faves as well. By the band’s own admission this isn’t for everyone but they’ll probably dig it anyway.
