Elizabeth Shepherd – Heavy Falls the Night

Do Right Music

In short: Get this album. Elizabeth Shepherd’s newest release is a flat-out high-energy exciting listen — here expect a storyteller’s jazz. Like the title of the first track “What Else” this dynamic vocalist teases with potential — with listeners asking what can come next — despite the three albums to her credit.

This one though is produced by Shepherd who seamlessly demonstrates that her talents as a singer-songwriter need to make room for this newest skill. To pick a favourite proves difficult: Shepherd’s full range is on display from the funky “What Else” through the sultry layered “Heavy Falls the Night” and the brilliant “A Song for Dinah Washington.” Shepherd’s in fine voice here and the combination of her vocals with longtime collaborators Scott Kemp(bass) and Colin Kingsmore (drums) is pure magic. As I said: Get this album.
