The saga that is Voivod — both futuristic vampire act lending the group its name and techno-metal band — has been a long one full of promises letdowns excitement failure and false finishes. Thankfully while some of those moments could have destroyed something of lesser constitution in the case of this thrash-influenced progressive-tinged Québécois act it has only solidified its power cementing its place in the annals of music and inspiring some truly outrageous innovative and infectious music.

Celebrating its legacy — and a new chapter in its history — in style thanks to the inclusion of latest guitarist Dan “Chewy” Mongrain Warriors of Ice is as monumental momentous and monolithic as anything from the previous quarter-century. Recorded live in their pseudo-hometown of Montreal circa 2009 one instantly feels the enthusiasm and vitality of the evening. Pinpointing some of the more precise bull’s eyes on their 12 albums tracks such as “Voivod” “Ripping Headaches” “Panorama” “Nuclear War” and “Astronomy Domine” are flawlessly executed delivered with bold tenacity and fervent attitude. Live albums are rarely worthwhile let alone invigorating. In this case however Voivod proves that even after years of upsets heartbreaks achievements and legendary accomplishments it’s still far from reaching its peak.
