True Love Lies delivers!

I didn’t realize until someone asked me but I haven’t been to very many Alberta Theatre Project’s plays recently. With that said True Love Lies is my favourite! Edgy provocative and dramatic the Brad Fraser written production delivers every step of the way.

Former local television favourite Dave Kelly proves he is not just a pretty face as he brings the role of Kane to life in this dramady (drama/comedy) about a nuclear family where not everything is as perfect as it seems. With a beautiful wife (Barbara Gates Wilson) and two children (Sarah Koury and Alexander Plouffe) life seems wonderful until Kane’s former male lover pops back into the picture in the form of the charming David (played by Kejean Cournoyer who is quite handsome) and shakes up everything.

Fraser is known for his edgy writing on Queer as Folk and packs some punch into this play with witty writing and perfect timing. Directed by Kate Newby the production hits home the fact that nothing really is as it seems and every family has its closets and demons. But what worked best is the characters and their interaction with one another — and the fact that it wasn’t a fairytale ending as much as reality. And the sky didn’t fall either.

ATP’s True Love Lies is entertaining and definitely worth a see.
